Keeping slate cool?

So I noticed something today, I have slate at the bottom of the vivarium, and the entire slate is very warm, so no discernible cool spot at the moment.

Anyone have any tips on how to cool down the slate? Will using tissue or some other substrate help with heat? The heat lamp and mat are to one side and UVB bulbs in top. It's for two baby bearded dragons, one 8 weeks the other 13 weeks. 5 foot vivarium planned already for these little guys. And if I do end up with a male and female or two males. we have a two storey viv planned instead that will be 4 foot each. So far I'm hoping for two female.

At the mo though I'm having big trouble keeping the vivarium cool at one side, they're currently sitting in their veggies trying to cool down!

Any ideas?

Yes there is a thermostat, it's the heat mat heating up the entire slate that's the problem. So the entire slate is around 34. Which is not good for a cool end.

Yes I do realise this. There is a plan a like I said were either building a two storey viv or a 5 foot depending on the beardies.

I have slate on the basking side and Lino on the cool side that keeps things as they should

Hmmm that may be my problem, the slate covers the entire bottom of the viv which is how I bought it ... If I put lino over half the slate I'm assuming the slate will still heat up the lino ...

I've turned off the heat mat anyway at the moment, heat wave has the temps getting high 30s around 38, I've removed the glass and put them back in such a way that there is more ventilation. The cool spot is around 30 which is way too warm for a cool spot haha so this is what I'm trying to fix. Would like it around 22 or so and the hot part 34, normally the hot side is 34 but as I've said with the heat wave outside it's hard, I've turned off all my aquarium heaters ha

You dont need the heat mat anyway they are of no use for beardies or most diurnal lizards for that matter. If you have a dimming stat then temps should not get higher than what you set it at.

Thats too low for a basking area it should be around 40-43.
Had my basking spot at 40 but they didn't bask ha they hid the entire time so I adjusted it to cooler and then they bask.
